Born and raised in New Jersey, Sarah's passion for theatre began in her childhood living room, where she forced her parents, grandparents, sister, and anyone else who was unfortunate enough to be caught in the building, to watch her "preform" the entire libretto of Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance (complete with costume changes and the insistance that "A Paradox" was actually "A Pair of Ducks"... duh)!
After graduating with a BFA in Drama from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Sarah spent a year and a half touring the United States as "Ado Annie" in the original cast of Cameron Macintosh's acclaimed revival of Oklahoma! Since then, she has been incredibly fortunate to continually work in regional theaters across the country, playing roles such as "Eponine" in Les Misérables, "Jo" in Little Women, "Nellie" in South Pacific, "Belle" in Beauty & the Beast, and many more. Most recently, Sarah was seen touring the United States once again in the original cast of the 25th Anniversary Production of Les Misérables.
Currently, Sarah serves as the Associate Artistic Director of The Active Theater in New York City, and has shifted her focus to the "other side of the table" (so to speak). At the moment, she is directing RESPECT: A Musical Journey of Women at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix, AZ. As a director, Sarah has also assisted Bud Martin, Gabriel Barre, and Scott C. Embler on several projects in NYC and Philadelaphia.
In 2005, Sarah started her website design company, Saranya Designs, which includes this very website! That same year, she lost the most influential person in her life: her grandfather Antranig "Andy" Shahinian, to whom she dedicates this website and all of her artistic endeavors.
